Personal loans FAQs

A personal loan is a lending product in which you borrow a lump sum of money and pay it back in installments over a specified period of time. Lenders typically charge a fixed interest rate on the amount borrowed, though loan features, terms and conditions can vary.

The personal loan process begins with an application. The lender will determine if you meet eligibility requirements for the loan, which usually involves evaluating your credit history and verifying your income. If approved, you’ll receive a loan offer, sign the loan agreement, and receive your funding.

A personal loan can be used for almost anything, including debt consolidation, home improvements, or medical bills. Lenders may have restrictions, though, such as not using the loan to pay for home purchases, college tuition, or illegal activities.

Personal loan ranges vary by lender. Usually the minimum amount is a few thousand dollars, and the maximum can go up to six figures. Within the range available, the personal loan credit limit you’re approved for will depend on your eligibility.

Every lender looks at a number of factors to determine if a borrower qualifies for its personal loan product, including a minimum credit score. Credit score requirements vary by lender. Borrowers with stronger credit profiles may qualify for more loan options and lower rates.

Checking your rate for a personal loan may or may not affect your credit score. It depends on whether the lender offers prequalification. For example, with Wells Fargo, you are able to check your rate with no impact to your credit score.

You can apply for a personal loan in a number of ways, but the process can vary by lender. For example, Wells Fargo lets you apply for a personal loan online, with most customers able to get a same-day decision. After checking your rates, you can apply by filling out an application, which asks for personal contact information, employment and income information, and how you intend to use the funds. You may also be asked to upload additional documentation as needed (e.g., recent pay stubs, identification).

How can we help?

Representative example of repayment terms for an unsecured personal loan: For $15,000 borrowed over 48 months at 14.99% Annual Percentage Rate (APR), the monthly payment is $417. This example is an estimate only and assumes all payments are made on time.

Before you apply, we encourage you to carefully consider whether consolidating your existing debt is the right choice for you. Consolidating multiple debts means you will have a single payment monthly, but it may not reduce or pay your debt off sooner. The payment reduction may come from a lower interest rate, a longer loan term, or a combination of both. By extending the loan term, you may pay more in interest over the life of the loan. By understanding how consolidating your debt benefits you, you will be in a better position to decide if it is the right option for you. New credit accounts are subject to application, credit qualification, and income verification.

Late fees may still be assessed.

To qualify for a customer relationship discount, you must have a qualifying Wells Fargo consumer checking account and make automatic payments from a Wells Fargo deposit account. To learn which accounts qualify for the discount, please consult with a Wells Fargo banker or consult our FAQs. If automatic payments are canceled, for any reason at any time, after account opening, the interest rate and the corresponding monthly payment may increase. Only one relationship discount may be applied per application.

On average, 97% of customers received their funds the day they signed for their personal loan. (Based on data from July – September 2026).
