Tips to avoid AI scams

Protect yourself from AI-enabled scams

Scammers may use artificial intelligence to make their tricks look and sound real.

Common red flags

From voice cloning and video deepfakes to targeted phishing messages, AI is often used to impersonate trusted contacts in order to steal your information or money. Be aware of the signs.

High-urgency requests

Unexpected requests for money or personal information

Unusually specific or overly personalized messages

Avoid AI-enabled scams

Scammers can clone voices with AI to create urgent, emotional calls, like a loved one needing money right away.

What to do:

  • Pause before reacting to anything that feels emotional or urgent.
  • Hang up, then call the individual back using a phone number you already know (not the number that just called you).
  • Create and use a verbal code word or phrase, something that isn't specific to your family or organization, to confirm a caller's identity.

AI can generate highly realistic but completely fake images and videos that scammers may use to promote false products or make false claims.

What to do:

  • Be cautious when engaging videos or pictures promoting something that seems too good to be true.
  • Verify info through official or trusted sources before sharing personal details or making financial decisions.
  • Be cautious with live videos as scammers can use AI to disguise their faces and voices in real time.

Scammers can use AI to gather info about you and craft messages that sound personal and legitimate, such as fake bank alerts, delivery updates, or account warnings. These messages often include links or phone numbers designed to lure you into contacting the scammer.

What to do:

  • Never click on links or open attachments from unknown, unexpected, or suspicious emails or texts.
  • Some fake sites use AI chatbots. Don’t share sensitive info with them.
  • Be careful what you share online, including on social media, as scammers can use exposed info to target you.

AI can generate lots of fake online reviews or false info about products and business opportunities.

What to do:

  • Check reviews carefully and be wary of deals that seem too good to be true. Too many 5-star reviews may indicate that the business is fake.
  • For new business opportunities, consult a trusted, independent professional before investing.

As AI-powered scams evolve, it’s more important than ever to protect your devices and online accounts.
