Empowering Veterans in Business

My name is Andrew Barnes, and I'm the Head of the Military and Veterans Segment for Commercial Banking. I've been in Wells Fargo for 26 years.

My military background has really provided an understanding of leveraging my teammates’ strengths, adapting and overcoming obstacles, striving for excellence, and really prioritizing the mission over personal interest.

What drew me to Commercial Banking was being able to help my own. So being able to help veteran-owned and veteran-led companies as they transitioned just as I did, except into the private sector when it comes to the business side of things.

My military background has truly helped me when it comes to understanding the values that veteran-owned and veteran-led companies bring to Commercial Banking, and really helping with their transition, as they're moving into the private sector. For relationships, it's really been invaluable, because it's been an icebreaker, having that military background, being able to speak the language, talk with them, and understand where they're coming from.

If you're a veteran looking at Commercial Banking, I would approach it with the same dedication that you had in the military. I would look and learn about the business and really understand it, I would start networking with veterans that sit within Commercial Banking for their valuable insights, and that'll help with a successful transition.

Veteran Values in Commercial Banking

My name is Jason Sutton. I'm the Managing Director and Ohio Market executive for Wells Fargo, and I've been at the bank for 21 years.

My journey from the military to the civilian sector certainly wasn't a straight path, and not unlike the path that many veterans face when making the transition.

What really drove me to Commercial Banking was the sense of purpose. When you're in the military, you know what you do matters, and it's often hard to replicate that in the civilian world.

In Commercial Banking, it's fascinating for me to work alongside business owners and entrepreneurs, to help them build their business, to grow their business, and to serve the communities in which they operate.

One of the biggest things I carried over from the military is how we approach problem solving and collaboration. In the service, you learn to understand the mission clearly, build a plan and communicate early and often with everyone involved. That mindset translates really well with clients.

Whether it's helping a business navigate a challenge, make a plan for growth, we focus on listening first, developing a solution that fits, and making sure all stakeholders are aligned throughout the process. It's about being proactive, staying mission focused, and working as a team to get results.

For those veterans trying to navigate into the Commercial Banking industry, just know that we've all been in your shoes. This transition can feel uncertain, but you're not alone.

One of the best things you can do is build your network early, lean into it, and reach out to those of us already in the industry. Use this as a resource. We want to help. And just as important, stay in touch with that network. Relationships are everything in this business. That starts with the people that have walked a similar path as we have.

Finally, when you're in a position to help those around you, pay it back. We all have to have each other's backs, just like we did when we were in uniform.
