To help you prepare your private student application, please refer to the checklist below.

  • School information (school name, your major, grade, and the school term for which you need the loan)
  • Social Security number
  • Permanent U.S. address
  • Employment and income information for the borrower and/or cosigner (if applicable)
  • Cost of attendance and estimated amount of financial assistance you expect to receive (if applicable)

Consider applying with a cosigner. (A cosigner may help you qualify for a student loan and potentially get a lower interest rate, however, a cosigner is not required to apply). Even if you have an established credit history, a cosigner may improve your ability to get approved, enable you to secure a lower interest rate, and speed up the credit decision process. Student borrowers that meet these requirements on their own do not need a cosigner (but may still choose to apply with a cosigner). Cosigners are required for borrower applicants who 1) do not meet age of majority for their state of residence, 2) are temporary resident aliens, or 3) are Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) individuals. Temporary resident aliens and DACA individuals are only eligible for select student loan products. For detailed citizenship requirements, refer to the eligibility criteria for each product on the Student Loan site.
