The Shelton Hardaway Short, Jr. Trust awards grants to support a variety of charitable causes that primarily benefit the people of Virginia.

Grant requirements

• To be eligible, organizations must qualify as exempt organizations under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code.
• Applications must be submitted through the online grant application form.

Grantmaking priorities

• There are no geographic limitations; however, the foundation has a practice of primarily supporting organizations in Central and Southern Virginia.
• All grants are in the form of memorials to one or more family members of Shelton Hardaway Short, Jr. Memorial gifts are made to charitable and educational organizations.

Annual application period and deadlines

Applications are accepted year-round. Applications must be submitted by September 15 to be reviewed at the October grant meeting.

Communications

Applicants will receive an automated email confirming their submission. Grant decisions are generally communicated by late October or early November for applications received by the deadline.

Required agreements and reports

Periodic progress reports and final reports may be required for funded projects.

About the Foundation

The Shelton Hardaway Short, Jr. Trust was established under a trust agreement in 1974. Mr. Short was a lifelong resident of Virginia, and the trust makes grants to charitable and educational organizations primarily located in his home state. Grants are made in the form of memorials to one or more of Mr. Short’s family.
