Fred Couples and Wells Fargo teaming up again for Wells Fargo Golf Invitational: July 31-Aug. 1, 2000
NEWCASTLE — January 28, 2000
National Tournament host Fred Couples, title sponsor Wells Fargo and The Golf Club at Newcastle are teaming up again to bring the Wells Fargo Invitational to the Seattle area. Couples will host 24 to 30 of his fellow professional golfers from the PGA Tour for the two-day event. The tournament will be a 36-hole stroke play championship with the pros playing 18 holes on both Monday, July 31 and Tuesday, Aug. 1. The 2000 affair will include a pro-am on July 31. The purse is expected to total between $675,000 and $750,000, depending on the size of field.
Title Sponsor Renews
Wells Fargo has renewed as the title sponsor for this year's event, whose official name is now the Wells Fargo Invitational.
"This tournament is not only a great sporting competition but also a fantastic way to raise funds for non-profit groups in our community," said Bob Byrne of Seattle, Wells Fargo's president for Washington. "Our employees and our customers had a great time at last year's tournament and we're thrilled to return this year as the title sponsor."
Other sponsors to date include Nordstrom, Fisher Broadcasting (KVI, KOMO & Star 101.5), United Airlines, and The Golf Club at Newcastle.
Tournament to Benefit Local Charities
The 2000 Wells Fargo Invitational will benefit education, medical research, and junior golf charities in the Seattle area. To date, the Couples' tournaments have generated more than $500,000 for various charities.
The oldest bank in the West, Wells Fargo is a strong supporter of its communities. Last year Wells Fargo donated more than $2 million to schools and non-profit groups in Washington.
Return To Newcastle
Located 20 minutes east of Seattle, The Golf Club at Newcastle will host the 2000 Wells Fargo Invitational. Its first 18 holes, the Coal Creek Course, will be the venue for the event. Nine holes of the second course (The China Creek Course) will open this year (most likely in July).
Scott Oki of Newcastle Golf LLC, the course owner-developer and chairman and CEO of Bellevue-based Oki Developments, Inc., said both public access courses are designed with routings, facilities and other amenities to accommodate tournament play.
"We're delighted to have Fred and his fellow pros return to Newcastle and we are pleased to enhance the fund-raising potential for local charities by donating the use of the course for this very special event," Oki commented.
Couples served as a design consultant and course strategist for The Golf Club at Newcastle, which opened for public play last May. Situated on 350 acres of rolling hills with panoramic views, Newcastle is the first collaboration between Couples and Robert Cupp.
The internationally acclaimed Cupp, founder of the Atlanta-based firm that bears his name, has been involved in the development of nearly 150 courses since 1968, including Pumpkin Ridge Golf Club near Portland, site of the 1996 U.S. Amateur Championship and the 1997 U.S. Women's Open Championship.
Tickets to the 2000 Wells Fargo Invitational will be available for purchase at all Nordstrom stores and Wells Fargo branches in Washington, starting around May 1. Ticket prices have not yet been set.
