CHINESE LANGUAGE SCREENS NOW AVAILABLE AT MANY WELLS FARGO ATMS
SAN FRANCISCO — December 11, 2002
In response to the increasingly diverse language needs of its customers, Wells Fargo is adding Chinese language screens to more than 2,600 WebATMSM machines. Customers who use Wells Fargo’s WebATM machines can now choose to have their transaction screens displayed in one of three languages – English, Spanish or Chinese.
“Wells Fargo values the diversity of our customers, communities and team members,” says Jonathan Velline, senior vice president for ATM Banking “Adding Chinese language screens to our ATMs demonstrates our commitment to serving our customers when, where and how they wish to be served as they fulfill their financial needs.”
The new screens continue a legacy of service to the Chinese-speaking community that goes back almost to the founding of the company 150 years ago. Wells Fargo was one of the first California companies to serve Chinese customers in their native language. In the 1870s, the company published four editions of its “Directory of Chinese Business Houses.” According to Stagecoach, Wells Fargo and the American West, the company’s 150th anniversary book, “Wells Fargo was the Chinese bank of choice dating back to the 1850s and forward to the present time. . . .In 1882, the same year the Chinese Exclusion Act passed, Wells Fargo sent a package of materials to all its agents” including the Chinese directory.
Customers who prefer to read traditional Chinese language can select this option after inserting their ATM card in one of the several Wells Fargo WebATM machines where this technology is available. After selecting the Chinese language option, the text of all remaining transaction screens will be displayed in traditional Chinese characters.
WebATM machines, which now offer the Chinese and Spanish language options, make up nearly half of Wells Fargo’s ATM network. “Wells Fargo was a leader in developing and deploying web-enabled ATMs to enhance our customers’ experience and make our ATMs more accessible through language choices and voice synthesis on talking ATMs.” says Velline. “We plan to continue to bring these enhancements to the rest of the ATMs in our network in the coming years.”
