About the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card

What is the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

The Wells Fargo EasyPay Card is a reloadable prepaid card that you can use to withdraw cash, pay bills, or make purchases at participating retailers and service providers worldwide. You have access to more than 13,000 Wells Fargo ATMs and approximately 5,800 branches where you can load money to your card and make free cash withdrawals.

What fees are associated with the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

View the fees in the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card Terms and Conditions (PDF) (bilingual version).

Can I build my credit with a Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

The Wells Fargo EasyPay Card won’t help you build your credit rating. It’s not a credit card, so there are no transactions to report to the credit agencies.

How to get a Wells Fargo EasyPay Card

Where can I get a Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

Apply online or visit a Wells Fargo branch to apply for a Wells Fargo EasyPay Card.

What do I need to apply for a Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

To apply for the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card, you will need:

  • A valid ID such as a driver's license or passport. In some cases, a second form of identification may be required.
  • $25 minimum opening deposit.

Can I get a second card for use by my spouse or other family member?

No, currently we only allow one owner for each Wells Fargo EasyPay Card.

Can I get a temporary card that I can use while I wait for my permanent card to arrive?

You can request a Wells Fargo EasyPay Instant Card at any Wells Fargo branch for access to your account. This temporary EasyPay Instant Card is in effect for 30 days from the time it is issued, or until you activate the permanent card you receive by mail, whichever occurs first. You can use the EasyPay Instant Card at the ATM and to make purchases and payments – including online and by phone.

If you plan to travel internationally, please allow 5 to 12 calendar days to receive your permanent EasyPay Card by mail before you leave. Keep in mind that the EasyPay Instant Card is not chip-enabled.  Chip cards have become the standard type of card used internationally, so there may be some purchases that cannot be made with the swipe feature on your EasyPay Instant Card.

Getting Started

How long will it take to receive my card and my Personal Identification Number (PIN)?

You will receive a new or replacement card within 5-12 calendar days.

For new cards, if you didn’t select a PIN when you requested your new card, you can expect to receive a system-generated PIN in the mail a couple of days after you receive your card.

You can use your current PIN with your replacement card.

If you need access to your account while you are waiting for your permanent card to arrive, please visit a Wells Fargo branch and request a Wells Fargo EasyPay Instant Card. The temporary card is active for up to 30 days or until you activate your permanent card, whichever occurs first.

If you don’t receive your permanent card within 5-12 calendar days, please call us at 1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557).

How do I activate my card?

When you receive your card, you should activate it right away. There are 3 ways to activate your Wells Fargo EasyPay Card:

  1. You can activate it online or from your Wells Fargo Mobile® app.
  2. Call the toll-free phone number on the sticker attached to the front of your card.
  3. You can activate the card by using it with your PIN at any Wells Fargo ATM.

Once you have activated the card, peel off the sticker and sign the signature panel on the back immediately. Destroy your old card and begin using your new card.

Can I customize the design of my card?

Yes, you have two easy ways to customize the look of your Wells Fargo EasyPay Card.

  1. At a Wells Fargo branch, you can select from a catalog of images to place on your new or replacement card. You should receive your card within 5-12 calendar days of selecting an image.

For more information on personalizing your card, visit the Card Design Studio service.

Adding money

How do I add money to my Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

You can add money to your card in several ways:

  • Set up direct deposit, so your paycheck or federal benefit is automatically deposited to your card.  Just complete the direct deposit form and then give it to your employer or payer.
  • Deposit cash or checks at a Wells Fargo ATM or branch. (Note: only checks drawn on a financial institution with a domestic routing number will be accepted for deposit.)
  • Deposit checks with your mobile phone or tablet using the Wells Fargo Mobile app. To learn more, visit Wells Fargo Mobile Deposit.
  • Make a transfer from your eligible Wells Fargo deposit account to your Wells Fargo EasyPay Card via online, phone, or mobile banking. (Note: Recurring transfers to your EasyPay Card are not allowed.)

Please review the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card Terms and Conditions (PDF) (bilingual version) for more details.

When will the deposit be available?

  • Cash deposits: same business day.
  • Electronic direct deposits/incoming wire transfers: same business day.
  • Check deposits: Funds are generally available on the first business day after the day we receive your deposits. For check deposits made at a Wells Fargo branch or ATM, up to $400 of the deposits may be available on the day of the deposits.

If we place a hold on a check, the first $200 will be available on the next business day. The remaining balance will be available no later than the seventh business day after the day of your deposit. We will notify you of the hold and when the funds will be made available to you.

Note: Deposits made before the cutoff time for each branch and Wells Fargo ATM will be processed that day. Deposits made after the cutoff time are treated as made on the next business day.

Please review the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card Terms and Conditions (PDF) (bilingual version) for more details.

Understanding daily card purchase and withdrawal limits

What are the daily purchase and ATM withdrawal limits for my card?

Your card comes with a daily maximum limit on the dollar amount of purchases you can make with your card. You also have a daily ATM withdrawal limit. To see your daily purchase and ATM withdrawal limits, you can:

  • Sign on to Wells Fargo Online® to access your Account Profile. Then select your card from the drop down menu.
  • Call 1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557),
  • Visit your local Wells Fargo branch, or
  • Reference the printed materials that came with your card.

How do I increase or decrease the daily purchase and ATM withdrawal limits on my card?

To request to increase or decrease your daily limits, contact us and we’ll check if they are eligible to be changed. You can either call us at 1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557), or talk to a banker at a Wells Fargo branch.

Paying bills and making purchases

How do I pay bills using my Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

If the biller accepts cards as a form of payment, then you can pay bills by providing the card number and expiration date directly to the biller.

Please note the prepaid subaccount number and routing number cannot be used to make payments. Wells Fargo Online Bill Pay is not available for prepaid cards.

Can I make a purchase for more than the amount remaining on my Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

It depends on where you use the card. Some merchants will permit you to use the card for part of the purchase price and pay the remainder with cash, a check, or another card. If you aren't sure whether the card balance will cover the purchase, be sure to ask the merchant if you can pay any remaining balance with another payment method.

What should I do if a merchant declines my Wells Fargo EasyPay Card?

It’s possible the card's available balance was less than the purchase amount. To avoid a decline, check your available balance by using our convenient tools such as mobile or text banking. Then inform the merchant of the card's remaining balance and ask if you may use another form of payment to pay the difference.

Can a hold be placed on funds in my Wells Fargo EasyPay Card for more than the actual transaction amount?

Yes, in some situations, a temporary hold may be placed against some or all of your card’s funds. The amount of the hold may differ from the actual transaction amount since the merchant may not know the total amount you will spend. For example, if a restaurant submits the authorization request for your meal before you add a tip, the authorization will not include the tip, but the final transaction amount will include the tip.

Please refer to the section on Authorization Holds in the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card Terms and Conditions (PDF) (bilingual version) for more details.

Does the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card work at gas stations?

Yes. If you pay at the pump, the pump may be programmed to check that your card has a sufficient available balance to pay for an average purchase of gas. To avoid a decline or a hold on your available balance, we recommend that you prepay for your gasoline inside the station. Please refer to the Authorization Holds section in the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card Terms and Conditions (PDF) (bilingual version) for more details.

What happens if I return an item that I purchased with my card?

Merchants have their own return policies, so check the merchant’s policy so you know when to expect the credit to be included in your available balance. Keep in mind that it may take up to one week for a credit to appear on your card.

How do I dispute a transaction?

The first step is to try and resolve the dispute directly with the merchant. If those efforts fail, call 1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557) to make a claim, and we will investigate it. Please refer to the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card Terms and Conditions (PDF) (bilingual version) for details regarding your responsibility to notify us of disputes within specific time frames.

Getting cash

Can I use my card at any ATM to get cash?

You can use your card at both Wells Fargo and non-Wells Fargo ATMs that display the PLUS network logo. At the ATM, you may need to select Checking if Prepaid is not an option. Please keep in mind your daily ATM withdrawal limit. Additionally non-Wells Fargo ATM owners and operators may apply a surcharge (unless waived by the terms of your account). Please review the Wells Fargo EasyPay Card Terms and Conditions (PDF) (bilingual version) for fees that may apply when using your card at a non-Wells Fargo ATM.

Can I get cash back above the amount of my purchase?

Yes, some retailers will allow you to specify an amount of cash back in addition to your purchase. To use this feature, you must follow the instructions on the retailer’s terminal and enter your PIN. Some retailers may charge a nominal fee for cash back above the amount of purchase.

Can I use Wells Fargo ATMs if I don't have my card?

Yes, you can use your mobile phone to request a one-time ATM Access Code using the Wells Fargo Mobile app.

To request an ATM Access Code, open the Wells Fargo Mobile app, select the Card-Free ATM option at the bottom of the Account Summary page, and tap the Get Code button. The 8-digit code will appear on your mobile device, or have it sent to you as a text that you can use at any Wells Fargo ATM.

At the ATM, select Use an Access Code on the lower right-hand side of the welcome screen. Enter your 8-digit code and your card’s Personal Identification Number (PIN). The code expires after 30 minutes and can only be used at Wells Fargo ATMs.

With an ATM Access Code, you can make one transaction at the ATM. Or, if you perform a non-monetary transaction like a balance inqury, you can first check your balance and then perform one monetary transaction like a cash withdrawal.

For more information, please visit the Card-Free ATM Access Code Questions.

Using a mobile wallet

Can I use my mobile device to make purchases with my card?

Yes, you can add your Wells Fargo EasyPay Card to your mobile wallet. To learn more, please visit our Mobile Wallet Basics page.

How can I use a mobile wallet to access a Wells Fargo ATM?

You can use a mobile wallet instead of your physical card to access a Wells Fargo ATM that displays the contactless symbol.

First, you need to add your Wells Fargo EasyPay Card to a mobile wallet supported by Wells Fargo. (See the Mobile Wallet Basics page for instructions on how to add your card to your mobile wallet.)

When you get to the ATM:

  • Activate your phone’s mobile wallet using your thumbprint or passcode.
  • Hold your phone near the contactless symbol on the ATM.
  • Enter your card’s PIN into the ATM when prompted, and then complete the ATM transaction.

How do I know if the Wells Fargo ATM supports mobile wallet access?

The Wells Fargo ATM supports mobile wallet access if the ATM displays the contactless acceptance symbol.

What kind of mobile phone and wallet do I need?

  • Enroll in mobile or text banking to bank while on the go.
  • Set up alerts.
  • Call 1-800-TO-WELLS (1-800-869-3557) anytime.

What happens if my card has a negative balance?

If your card has a negative balance, we will not charge a fee for the negative balance; however, you must make a deposit or transfer promptly to return your card to a positive balance. A negative balance may occur if the merchant processes a transaction without an authorization or submits a final purchase amount that is greater than the original authorization (such as a restaurant tip).

Protecting my card

How does Wells Fargo help protect my card?

Wells Fargo helps to protect your card with:

  • Zero Liability protection: You will be reimbursed for promptly reported unauthorized card transactions.
  • 24/7 fraud monitoring: We regularly monitor for unauthorized transactions.
  • Chip technology: You card has chip technology which provides added security because it is extremely difficult to counterfeit or copy when used at a chip-enabled merchant terminal or ATM, and it doesn’t store personal information.
  • Alerts: You can also sign up for alerts to keep you informed on your card activity. Sign up for alerts or learn more.

What can I do to help protect my card?

Your card comes with Zero Liability protection at no extra cost, which means you will be reimbursed for unauthorized card transactions as long as you report them promptly. You can also visit the Fraud Information Center for resources to help your risk of fraud and identity theft.

What is a chip card?

A chip card has a chip on the front of the card, as well as the traditional magnetic stripe on the back. The chip provides added security when used at a chip-enabled merchant terminal or ATM and has greater global acceptance. When you insert your chip card into a chip-enabled terminal, a unique security code is generated. This makes it extremely difficult for anyone to reuse your information and better protects you against counterfeit card fraud.

If a merchant or ATM has not yet adopted chip technology, your transaction will be processed using the magnetic stripe as it is today. Learn more about chip cards.
