Samsung Pay Frequently Asked Questions

If you want to know more about using Samsung Pay to make a purchase with your Wells Fargo card, here are answers to some common questions.

What is Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay allows you to pay at businesses through the use of proprietary technology built-in to compatible Samsung phones and Gear smartwatches. After you have added eligible credit or debit cards to Samsung Pay you may use it to pay at most businesses where cards are accepted and for in-app purchases in participating apps, instead of providing your physical credit or debit card.

How does Samsung Pay work?

Samsung Pay uses proprietary technology that works with both Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) and Near Field Communication (NFC) to make contactless mobile payments. MST and NFC enable compatible Samsung phones and Gear smartwatches to make transactions at most card readers where you can swipe or tap your card, excluding gas station pumps.

Where can I use Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay works almost anywhere you can swipe or tap your card. Samsung Pay does not currently work at gas station pumps where you have to insert your card, but it will work at most gas station cashier card readers. You can also make in-app purchases in participating apps.

Which devices can I use with Samsung Pay?

For a list of supported Samsung devices that can support Samsung Pay, please visit Samsung Pay Support, and select Devices.

What Wells Fargo cards can I add to Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay will work with most of our Visa and American Express cards including Wells Fargo Visa® credit cards, debit cards, and prepaid cards; Visa business credit and debit cards; and with our Wells Fargo Propel American Express® credit cards.

How do I get Samsung Pay?

Samsung Pay is automatically installed through a software update for eligible devices. If Samsung Pay is not on your device, visit this Samsung Pay support page for details on how to set up Samsung Pay on your phone.

How do I make in-store purchases with Samsung Pay?

Open the Samsung Pay app either by swiping up from your home screen, or by tapping the icon on your home screen, then select the card you want to pay with. For security, verify your identity by authenticating with your Samsung Pay PIN number. Then hover your device about ½ inch over the card reader where you’d usually swipe or tap your physical card to complete the transaction.

For authentication, instead of the Samsung Pay PIN, you may also use your phone’s built-in biometric options.  Based on your phone model and how it’s set up, those can include either authenticating with the fingerprint reader or the Iris Scanner (eye) on some newer Samsung phones

Can Samsung Pay make online or in-app purchases?

In addition to in-store payments, you can also make in-app purchases in participating apps.  Online payments are not currently supported.

Do I need to be connected to the internet or a cellular network to make a payment?

No, an active internet connection is not required to make in-store purchases, but your device should connect to the internet at least once per day to ensure that Samsung Pay stays up to date and remains active. Samsung Pay does require an active internet connection to activate the app or add a new card.

How is my default payment card in Samsung Pay determined?

The last card you made a purchase with in Samsung Pay will automatically appear as the card that would be used the next time you open the app. However, you can always swipe between all the cards you have added and select a different card before making a purchase.

Does Wells Fargo charge anything to use Samsung Pay?

No. Wells Fargo does not charge a fee for customers to use Samsung Pay.

How can I keep track of purchases I’ve made with Samsung Pay?

Most transactions made through Samsung Pay are viewable shortly after processing, for one month from the time of purchase. Simply open the app and tap on a card to see the last 10 Samsung Pay transactions made with that card. Additionally, a push notification with transaction details will be sent to your device after each Samsung Pay purchase. Note: Push notifications require an active internet connection.

Why is the transaction amount in my Samsung Pay transaction history different from what’s in my Online Banking or Mobile Banking account detail?

If you make a Samsung Pay purchase with your card, the merchant may request authorization for an initial amount and send us the actual transaction amount later for payment. The initial authorized amount appears in your Samsung Pay transaction history, but the actual transaction amount is deducted from your account.

This happens frequently in places where:

  • You can add a tip (restaurants, salons)
  • There can be a significant difference between the amount that's authorized initially and the actual transaction amount (hotels, car rental agencies)

For most card purchases, we receive the payment request, including the actual transaction amount, within 3 business days of the transaction.

Keep track of your transactions and ensure you have sufficient funds in your accounts to cover the final payment.

Where can I learn more about Samsung Pay?

Samsung Gear

Which phones support Samsung Pay on the Samsung Gear?

Android phones running Android OS version 4.4 and above support Samsung Pay on Samsung Gear smartwatches, through the Samsung Gear app. The devices must have the most up-to-date version of the Samsung Gear app installed.

How is the Samsung Pay app different from the Samsung Gear app?

The Samsung Pay app controls the Samsung Pay service on the phone, which includes which cards are added, transactional history, etc. The Samsung Gear app is a separate app on the phone that enables customers to manage their Gear smartwatch. It controls the Samsung Pay service on the Gear smartwatch, which also includes what cards are added, transactional history, etc.

How do I add a card to my Gear device?

  1. Open the Samsung Gear app on your phone.
  2. Tap Samsung Pay.
  3. Tap Add card.
  4. Take a picture of the card, or manually enter the card number, cardholder name, expiration date, CVC/CVV code and zip code.

If requested, follow any additional steps to activate and verify your card. Samsung Pay requires that Gear users activate a security PIN to use the service. If you do not already have a PIN, you will be asked to create one.

Are the cards that I have already added to my Samsung phone for Samsung Pay also available on the Gear smartwatch?

No. You cannot directly import cards which have been enrolled in Samsung Pay. Adding a card to Samsung Pay on your Samsung phone doesn't automatically add the card to your Gear smartwatch. Conversely, adding a card to your smartwatch doesn't automatically add the card to your phone. However, the same card can be added separately to both your Samsung phone and the Gear smartwatch. Or, you can add a card to your smartwatch and not add it to your phone.

Can I use the Gear smartwatch to make online or in-app purchases?

Samsung Pay, on your Gear smartwatch, can currently only be used for in-store payments.

Does the phone have to be present in order to make a purchase using the Gear smartwatch?

No. Once your smartwatch has an active card, it can be used independently of the phone for payment. Your phone is not needed to pay at the store.

Where can I view transaction history made with Samsung Pay?

If the purchase was made using your Samsung phone, you can view your transaction history in the Samsung Pay app. If the purchase was made using your Gear smartwatch, you can view your transaction history in the Samsung Gear app. Additionally, digital wallet transactions made with your Wells Fargo card will appear on your Wells Fargo Online® account activity screen (online and mobile) and account statement.

Where can I use my Gear smartwatch with Samsung Pay to make purchases?

You can use Samsung Pay on your Gear smartwatch to make purchases at merchants equipped with Near Field Communication (NFC) or Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) terminals.

  • Near Field Communication (NFC): Technology that enables devices in close proximity to communicate. Payment transactions using NFC technology require a contactless terminal and an NFC-enabled mobile device.
  • Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST): Technology that emits a magnetic signal that mimics the magnetic strip on a traditional payment card. MST sends a magnetic signal from your device to the payment terminal’s card reader to emulate swiping a physical card without having to upgrade the terminal’s software or hardware). MST technology is accepted at nearly all payment terminals with a card reader.

What is MST?

MST (Magnetic Secure Transmission) is a groundbreaking technology for sending data using magnetic waves with the same card readers retailers have been using for years. It replicates a card swipe by wirelessly transmitting magnetic waves to a standard card reader, enabling most card readers to receive mobile payments, except gas station pumps.

What is NFC?

NFC (Near Field Communication) wirelessly transmits data using radio waves. Samsung Pay uses NFC to wirelessly transmit payment information to payment terminals with NFC readers that have been activated for use.

What is the difference between MST and NFC technology?

With Samsung Pay, either NFC or MST technology can be used to make contactless transactions. The key difference is that NFC requires an NFC-enabled card reader (newer technology available at fewer U.S. retailers) whereas MST works with many more types of card readers. Because Samsung Pay incorporates both NFC and MST technologies, it works almost anywhere you can swipe or tap your card.

How close does the device have to be to the card reader for MST to work?

For best results, hover your device about one-half inch over the card reader above where you’d usually swipe or tap a physical card. If the transaction doesn’t process, move your device slowly across the terminal.
