Apple Pay® Frequently Asked Questions

Whether you're a customer wanting to know how to use Apple Pay to make a purchase, or a merchant wanting to know how Apple Pay and Wells Fargo together make payments simple, here are answers to common questions.

How can I add my Wells Fargo Debit or Credit card to Apple Wallet, so it can be used with Apple Pay?

There are two ways to add your card to Apple Wallet, through the Wells Fargo Mobile® App or directly through the Apple Wallet. The process for adding a card through the Wells Fargo Mobile App is different from the process of adding a card using the Apple Wallet on your Apple device. To use Apple Pay on an iPhone®, you must have an NFC-enabled phone (iPhone 6 or above) using iOS 10 or above. For eligible device and Operating System compatibility information, please see the "Set up Apple Pay" page on Apple's website.

Add your card through the Wells Fargo Mobile app (we recommend, for the best experience, using an iPhone)

  1. Sign on to the Wells Fargo Mobile app.
  2. Tap the menu icon, then tap Settings
  3. Tap Set Up Cards for Apple Pay
  4. All cards that are eligible for Apple Wallet will be displayed. Tap the Add to Apple Wallet button next to the card you want to add to Apple Wallet, then follow the instructions to verify your card.

  1. Open Wallet and tap the plus (+) sign.
  2. Position your card in the camera frame to automatically enter your card information. Enter the security code, which can be found on the back of your Wells Fargo Visa Card, or on the front of your Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card.
  3. Wells Fargo will then receive and verify your card information. In some cases, you may be asked for additional information to verify your card.

iPad®:

  1. Go into Settings and tap Wallet & Apple Pay
  2. Tap Add Credit or Debit Card
  3. Position your card in the camera frame to automatically enter your card information. Enter the security code, which can be found on the back of your Wells Fargo Visa Card, or on the front of your Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card.
  4. Wells Fargo will then receive and verify your card information. In some cases, you may be asked for additional information to verify your card.

Apple Watch®:

  1. Open the Apple Watch app on your iPhone (must be running iOS 8.2 or higher) and tap select Wallet & Apple Pay.
  2. Tap Add Credit or Debit Card.
  3. Position your card in the camera on your iPhone to automatically enter its information. Enter the security code, which can be found on the back of your Wells Fargo Visa Card, or on the front of your Wells Fargo Propel American Express® Card.
  4. Wells Fargo will then receive and verify your card information. In some cases, you may be asked for additional information to verify your card.

MacBook Pro® with Touch ID®:

  1. Go to System Preferences > Wallet & Apple Pay
  2. Click Add Credit.
  3. Follow the steps to add a new card. (If you're asked to add the card that you use with iTunes®, just enter its security code.)
  4. Click Next.

After you confirm your Wells Fargo card has been added to your eligible device, you’re ready to use it in Apple Pay.

What devices can I use with Apple Pay?

You can use Apple Pay on eligible iPhones, iPads, Apple Watches, MacBook Pro with Touch ID and Macs (Safari browser only) using the latest operating systems. For a list of compatible devices and required operating systems, go to www.apple.com/apple-pay.

What Wells Fargo cards can I add to Apple Pay?

Apple Pay will work with most of our consumer and small business cards including Wells Fargo Visa® credit cards, Debit Cards, and prepaid cards; and with our Wells Fargo Propel American Express® credit cards.

Can I use multiple Wells Fargo cards with Apple Pay?

Yes. For each Apple Pay enabled device (iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch and MacBook Pro with Touch ID) you can load up to eight cards. Devices do not share cards, so if you want the same card on two different devices, you will need to load the card on each device separately.

Why am I being asked to verify my Wells Fargo card?

For security reasons, we may need you to provide additional verification to add your Wells Fargo card to Apple Pay. If necessary, Wallet or the Apple Watch app will tell you how to verify your card.

If your information is verified, you should receive a Wallet or Apple Watch app notification that your card is ready for Apple Pay. If you haven’t received a notification after an hour, please call us at the toll-free number on the back of your card.

What is a default card for Apple Pay?

Your default card for Apple Pay is the card that is automatically used every time you make a purchase.

How do I set my Wells Fargo card as my default card for Apple Pay?

Setting your Wells Fargo card as your default is simple, and you only need to do it once. Go to Settings, Wallet & Apple Pay and tap Default Card selection. Choose your Wells Fargo card as your default.

Note the first card you add to Apple Pay will automatically be your default card, but you can update it at any time.

Does Wells Fargo charge anything to use Apple Pay?

No. Wells Fargo does not charge a fee for customers to use Apple Pay.

Where can I use Apple Pay?

Apple Pay is available on your Apple Pay enabled iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch in participating merchant apps, and you can use Apple Pay with your iPhone and Apple Watch at more than a million stores and restaurants whose payment terminals are set up to accept contactless payments. You can also make purchases from participating online merchants via the Safari browser.

View the list of merchants at the Apple Pay site.

What is a contactless payment?

Contactless payments are transactions that use chip-based technology and require no physical connection between the payment device (a card or mobile device) and the physical merchant terminal.

Is Apple Pay safe and secure for making payments? How does Wells Fargo help protect me against fraud?

The safety and security of your account information is of the highest importance.

As a security measure, you may receive a “verification required” message when adding your card to Apple Pay. Once verified, an on-screen message will appear stating that the card is ready for use. This verification is part of our multi-layered approach to security in payments.

Additionally, when we review mobile wallet providers we look for payment safety, quality of service, and ease of use for our customers. When you make payments with Apple Pay and your Wells Fargo card:

  • Your full card number is not shown to the merchant or to Apple Pay.
  • All transactions are monitored by Wells Fargo’s risk and fraud detection systems.
  • Purchases made using Apple Pay are protected by Zero Liability, so you won’t be held responsible for promptly reported unauthorized transactions.

What if I find unauthorized charges on the card I use with Apple Pay on my iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or MacBook Pro with Touch ID?

Your Wells Fargo Debit Card and credit card automatically come with the built-in security of Wells Fargo’s fraud monitoring and Zero Liability protection. If your card or its number is ever lost or stolen, you’re not responsible for unauthorized transactions when you report them promptly.

What if my iPhone, iPad or MacBook Pro with Touch ID is lost or stolen?

In addition to notifying your mobile carrier, please call the Wells Fargo number on the back of your card promptly and mention that you added your Wells Fargo card to Apple Pay so that we can disable your card for use with Apple Pay. What happens if I unpair my Apple Watch from my iPhone?

If you unpair your Apple Watch from your iPhone, all of your Apple Pay information is wiped from your Apple Watch. To use Apple Pay on your Apple Watch again, you will need to re-add your card information using the same process as when you initially set it up.

Where can I find more information about Apple Pay?

To learn more about Apple Pay, please visit the Apple Pay site.

Why is the transaction amount displayed in Wallet different from what's in my Wells Fargo Online® or Wells Fargo Mobile® account detail?

If you make an Apple Pay purchase with your Debit Card, the merchant may request authorization for an initial amount and send us the actual transaction amount later for payment. The initial authorized amount appears in your Wallet, but the actual transaction amount is deducted from your account.

This happens frequently in places where:

  • You can add a tip (restaurants, salons)
  • There can be a significant difference between the amount that's authorized initially and the actual transaction amount (hotels, car rental agencies)

For most Debit Card purchases, we receive the payment request, including the actual transaction amount, within 3 business days of the transaction.

Keep track of your transactions and ensure you have sufficient funds in your accounts to cover the final payment.

How do merchants accept payments from Apple Pay?

Businesses that accept contactless payments can accept payments from Apple Pay.

Merchants with questions about their terminals’ capability to accept contactless payments, or about enabling terminals to accept payments from Apple Pay, should contact Wells Fargo Merchant Services at 1-800-451-5817.

Will merchants be charged a higher rate for transactions made through Apple Pay?

In-person purchases using Apple Pay will be processed just like other in-person transactions. Similarly, purchases made in-app using Apple Pay will be processed just like other online purchases. Merchants with questions should contact Wells Fargo Merchant Services at 1-800-451-5817 or their Merchant Services relationship manager if they have additional questions.

How can merchants let customers know they accept payments from Apple Pay?

Many customers may already be familiar with the universal contactless acceptance symbol. This symbol usually appears on the front of a merchant’s contactless capable terminal or peripheral.

Which cards can be added to Apple Pay?

Eligible Visa and American Express cards can be used with Apple Pay.

What is a contactless payment?

Contactless payments are transactions that use chip-based technology and require no physical connection between the payment device (a card or mobile device) and the physical merchant terminal.

What is NFC technology?

Near Field Communication (NFC) technology enables devices in close proximity to communicate. Payment transactions using NFC technology require a contactless merchant terminal and an NFC-enabled mobile device.

Who provides the customer service for merchants wanting to accept Apple Pay?

Wells Fargo Merchant Services customers can call 1-800-451-5817 if they have additional questions about accepting Apple Pay, or they can call their Merchant Services relationship manager.
