2018 Midterm Elections—What’s at Stake for Investors

Wells Fargo Investment Institute - September 11, 2018

Key Insights

  • Much is at stake in this year’s midterm elections. Republicans’ control of the House and Senate is slim. Turnout likely will be a determining factor in candidate races.
  • Historically, following the midterm elections, the president’s party has lost a significant number of seats in the House of Representatives. We view Democrats taking the Senate as the more difficult task for that party, even though the Republican control margin is slimmer than in the House. Thus, our most likely scenario consists of Democrats taking the House, but the Senate remaining in Republican control.
  • Voters’ key issues include trade, government spending and taxes, immigration, economic policy and regulation, and some of the president’s positions. These issues will be key to determining turnout and the election results.
  • We believe that investors should avoid making investment changes based purely on speculation over election outcomes. As policies change, investment opportunities may arise, but investors would be wise to await signs of action in Congress. We continue to believe that it is important for investors to maintain and follow their longer-term investment plan.
