A stock certificate -- also known as certificate of stock or share certificate -- is a legal document that certifies ownership of a specific number of shares of stock in a corporation. In the United States, electronic registration typically has replaced dissemination of stock certificates. A customer may be asked to provide proof of stock ownership to document the value of the stock so the asset amount can be verified.
