What types of accounts does WellsTrade support?

We offer standard WellsTrade investment accounts and accounts for Traditional IRAs, Roth IRAs, SEP IRAs, and Education Savings accounts (ESAs). When you open a WellsTrade IRA, you have the option to roll over assets from another IRA, or to roll over a plan held with a former employer (e.g., 401(k), 403(b), 457(b)).

What is the Brokerage Cash Services feature associated with my WellsTrade account?

Your WellsTrade account’s Brokerage Cash Services feature (for eligible account types) will serve as your funding account when you conveniently transfer money and make deposits. For example, you can:

  • Transfer money between your Wells Fargo accounts
  • Make teller deposits at any Wells Fargo branch
  • Deposit checks with your smartphone through Wells Fargo Mobile® deposit
  • Send and receive money with Zelle®
  • Add cash directly through automated clearing house (ACH) transactions

Your WellsTrade funding account will display as “Brokerage Cash” within Wells Fargo Transfer & Pay and Wells Fargo Mobile deposit. 

How do I complete my account setup?

There are 2 steps to completing your account setup

  1. First, sign and return your account documents to activate your account
  2. Add funds to your account so you will be ready to trade and invest

Where do I find my account documents?

  1. Sign on to your investment account online 
  2. Go to Portfolio > Statements & Documents
  3. Choose Other Account Documents from the dropdown menu and select Account Agreements

How do I sign and return my account documents?

If your account is eligible for electronic signature, you will be sent an email with instructions on how to access your New Account Package online and complete your account setup including how to sign documents electronically. You will also receive an email with instructions on how to access your New Account Package online if you specified that you'd prefer to receive the documents electronically.

If your account is not eligible for electronic signature, please check your mailbox for your New Account Package, which contains important documents for you to sign and return.  If you would prefer not to wait for this document to arrive in the mail, you may print, sign, and return the Client Acknowledgement/Agreement and W-9 (PDF) form by fax to the number on the form. You can also access all your account documents online as described above and print and sign and return the required page(s) by mail or fax. 

Your New Account Package also includes helpful information about how to get started using your account and other important details.

When will I receive my new WellsTrade account number?

If you applied for your WellsTrade account online, your WellsTrade reserved account number will be displayed immediately on the final page of the application that begins with "Thank You." Please write this number down as you will need it if you have questions about your application. 

Once your account is opened, your account number will be in your New Account Package. You will receive this kit within 5 – 7 days if you elect to receive it by mail or you will receive an email with instructions for accessing your New Account Package.

Where can I find specific forms that I need?

Many forms are available at WellsTrade Account Forms.

If you do not see the form you need, you can:

  1. Sign on to your investment account
  2. Go to Customer Service > Forms
  3. Select the appropriate category tab: Account, Money & Securities, IRA, or Tax
  4. Select the desired form to print and complete

If you prefer, you can call us at 1-800-TRADERS (1-800-872-3377) and we can email required forms to you.

Whom do I call for questions?

How do I fund my WellsTrade account?

Whether it's for your newly opened WellsTrade account or an existing one, you have several choices available to you after we’ve received your signed account agreements:

Transfer cash from a bank account

With your Brokerage Cash Services feature, you can transfer funds between your banking and brokerage accounts and your WellsTrade account online — including certain non-Wells Fargo accounts - to easily make transfers or payments. (If you have a WellsTrade accounts without Brokerage Cash Services, you will be unable to transfer funds between brokerage accounts or non-Wells Fargo accounts online). Just sign on with Wells Fargo Online®, and access the Transfer and Pay menu. You can make a one-time transfer or set up recurring transfers.

If you don't see a non-Wells Fargo checking or savings account you are looking for, you can simply add it to your Transfers list online: 

  1. Sign on to Wells Fargo Online 
  2. Select the Transfer and Pay menu 
  3. Select ‘Add a non-Wells Fargo Account’ from the Transfer Money screen

Please note that any account owner of your WellsTrade account must also be listed as an owner on your linked bank account.

Transfer cash from another Wells Fargo Advisors investment account

You can request to transfer funds between your WellsTrade account and other Wells Fargo Advisors accounts with the Brokerage Cash Services feature using the Transfer and Pay menu as described above. Your Brokerage Cash number will appear as a choice in the Transfer to and Transfer from menus. If you do not have this feature or prefer to transfer individual securities, please complete, sign, and return the WellsTrade Letter of Authorization to Transfer Funds or Securities (PDF) form. 

Transfer your account from another investment firm

You can easily consolidate accounts from other financial firms into your WellsTrade account. If you would like to transfer all or some of your assets from another investment firm you can do so online or submit a paper form:

Submit a Client Account Transfer form online (eligible accounts only will see this option): 

  1. Sign on to Wells Fargo Online®
  2. Select Brokerage
  3. From the Customer Service menu, select Forms
  4. Select Submit Online beside Client Account Transfer Form

Submit a paper form:

  1. Follow steps 1 - 3 above or access the form below
  2. Select the Client Account Transfer Form (PDF), print, complete, sign and return it, per the step by step instructions on the form. You can use your WellsTrade account number found at the end of your online application or in your New Account package when you fill out this form.

Deposit a check using your mobile device

Use the Wells Fargo mobile app to deposit checks to your WellsTrade account with your mobile device using your Brokerage Cash number, which is available when you sign on to Wells Fargo Online and on your WellsTrade account statement.

Make a deposit at a bank branch

Visit the tellers at Wells Fargo branches and make a deposit to your WellsTrade account using your Brokerage Cash number, which is available when you sign on to Wells Fargo Online and on your WellsTrade account statement.

Mail a check

Make your check payable to Wells Fargo Advisors, and please write your account number in the memo section. Send your check to:

Wire transfer

Quickly transfer funds to your WellsTrade account from nearly anywhere in the United States. Please be aware that most banks will charge a fee for this service. Please call us at 1-800-TRADERS for wire transfers coming from a foreign country.

IRA, rollover, or 401(k) accounts

IRA Contributions – How can I contribute to a WellsTrade IRA?

  • You can contribute to an eligible WellsTrade IRA online using the Transfer and Pay menu. See the section above, How do I fund my WellsTrade account?
  • You can also complete the WellsTrade IRA Contribution Form (PDF) to make a contribution into a WellsTrade IRA, SEP, SIMPLE or Education Savings Account (ESA). This form should be completed by the IRA owner, Employer (if a SEP or SIMPLE) or the Responsible Party (if an ESA). 
  • If you want to transfer your account from another investment firm into your WellsTrade account, see the section above, How do I fund my WellsTrade account > Transfer your account from another investment firm

You can also log in to your investment account then visit, Customer Service and Forms to access forms.

Rollover from a qualified plan

Contact your former employer or retirement plan provider to request that your assets be directly rolled over to your WellsTrade IRA account. They may require you to complete their paperwork in order to transfer the assets. . They will need your new WellsTrade account number, so have your reserved account number ready when requesting your rollover.  

If you have a rollover check, you can complete the IRA/ESA Rollover Contribution form.

IRA Distributions - How can I request a distribution from my WellsTrade IRA account?

To request a one-time distribution from your WellsTrade IRA account, complete the WellsTrade IRA Distribution form. Please complete all the required fields, sign and fax or mail the form indicated at the bottom of the form.

To establish automatic distributions, complete the IRA Election of Distribution form. Please complete all the required fields, and sign and fax or mail the form as indicated at the bottom of the form.

You can sign in to your investment account, then visit Customer Service and Forms. If you prefer, you can call us at 1-800-TRADERS (1-800-872-3377) and we can e-mail the required form to you.

When will the initial funding be transferred into my WellsTrade account from my bank account?

No transactions can occur in your account, including funding, until we receive your signed account documents. Once your WellsTrade account is activated, the initial funding may be transferred from your bank account by the next business day, though there are multiple ways to fund your WellsTrade account as described above.

How to Access and Manage Your Account Online

When can I access my account online?

In many cases, your accounts will be opened the same day or early the next day and will be available for online access. If not, you can expect your account will be opened and available for online access within 2 business days of receiving your application.

How do I view my new account online?

If you already access your Wells Fargo accounts through www.wellsfargo.com:

  1. Sign on using the same username and password.
  2. From the Account Summary screen, click on your investment account balance.

    Note: If you do not see your investment account after you sign on, access Manage Online Settings through Accounts and Settings > Profile and Settings in the More menu.

If you do not currently access accounts through www.wellsfargo.com:

  1. Enroll in Wells Fargo Online® now.
  2. Provide the identification requested and choose a password. Enter your WellsTrade account number when requested.
  3. From the Account Summary screen, click on your investment account balance.

Account Administration and Features for Your Account 

When will I get my WellsTrade brokerage account statements?

You will receive a statement at least once a quarter, and also in any month that activity, such as a trade, deposit or withdrawal, occurs in your account. Your statement reflects activity for the entire calendar month. It is processed after the close of the market on the last business day of the month.

You should receive your statement shortly after the end of the month. All statements will be mailed to your address of record, unless you choose to receive your statements online, which can save paper and time.

If you link your WellsTrade account to your Portfolio by Wells Fargo relationship, you may choose to receive one monthly combined statement.

How do I save paper and time by setting up my investment communications online (e.g. statements, trade confirmations, tax records)?

You can set up your investment account communications and documents for electronic delivery the first time you sign on to your investment account. You can also sign on at any time and go to Customer Service > Document Delivery Preferences. Save paper and time by setting up your investment account communications and documents for electronic delivery. Access up to 7 years of investment statements, trade confirmations, and tax records, all in one place. Sorting by date, document type, or subject makes it easy to find exactly what you need. And, it’s free and secure.

How soon can I start trading?

Your account is usually opened within 2 business days; however we need to receive your signed new account documents for your account to be activated. These documents are located in your New Account Package.

After we have received your signed account documents to activate your account, and your account is funded, you may begin trading.  

If you would prefer not to wait for the Client Acknowledgement/Agreement and W-9 document to arrive in the mail, you may access the document within the New Account Package located in the Statement and Documents section and print it once you sign on to your account. You can also print, sign and return the Client Acknowledgement/Agreement and W-9 (PDF) form by fax to the number on the form.

With your WellsTrade account you can place trades online, get quotes and check your balance by phone using our automated phone system or by phone with a representative 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There are additional fees for agent-assisted trades. Access your Getting Started Guide included in your WellsTrade New Account Package for more details.

How can I set up a margin account?

To open a new investment account and request margin, apply when you complete your application online or call 1-866-243-0931.

If you have already opened your WellsTrade account and did not request margin privileges at that time, you can apply for margin by completing a WellsTrade Margin Customer Application/Agreement (PDF). Sign on to your investment account, then go to Customer Service and Forms, or call 1-800-TRADERS (1-800-872-3377) and we can e-mail the appropriate form to you.

Please complete all the required fields, sign and fax or mail the form as indicated. Margin is not available for IRA accounts. You can also call us at 1-800-TRADERS (1-800-872-3377). Learn more about margin.

How can I trade options in my account?

To open a new investment account and request options trading, call 1-866-243-0931.

If you have already opened your WellsTrade account and did not request options trading at that time, sign on to your investment account, and go to Customer Service and Forms or call 1-800-TRADERS (1-800-872-3377) to request a WellsTrade Options application. We can email the appropriate form to you. Please note for certain options trades, a margin account is also required.

How can I provide access to my WellsTrade account for third parties so others I designate can view and/or conduct business in my brokerage account for me?

At your discretion, you may give someone access to view your account online or to receive duplicate statements and confirms. You may also give someone limited or full trading authority to place trades in your account.

Do I need to open a new Portfolio by Wells Fargo® relationship?

No. However, you qualify for discounted online trades when you link your WellsTrade account to your Portfolio by Wells Fargo® relationship.
