What is the Homeownership Grant Program?

The Homeownership Grant Program provides financial resources to local nonprofit organizations focusing on homebuyer education, pre-and post-purchase counseling, first-time homebuyer counseling, and foreclosure counseling and prevention activities which create sustainable homeownership opportunities for low-to moderate income people.

How do I apply?

Visit the Housing Foundation website and read the program Guidelines for Giving. Then review the online questionnaire and submit your application through the online process.

What happens if I miss the proposal deadline?

If you miss the proposal deadline your application will be submitted in the next giving cycle. See the Grant Program Guidelines for Giving (PDF)* for the proposal submission periods.

If my proposal is declined can I reapply?

The reason for the decline will determine if you are eligible to reapply. If we decline your proposal, we will send you a letter that includes the reason.

How much funding can I apply for?

While there is currently not a limit, the average grant amount over the last 3 years was approximately $7,500. We encourage organizations to request the amount needed for the project or program.

If my organization is not a 501(c)(3) or tax exempt, are we still eligible?

No. the program guidelines require your organization to be tax exempt under Internal Revenue Service Code 501(c)(3).

If my organization is a private foundation, is it eligible?

No. The Housing Foundation does not provide support to IRS 501(c)(3) tax-exempt private foundations.

Can I submit my proposal directly to my Charitable Giving Manager?

No. All applications must be submitted through the online process as indicated on the Housing Foundation website.

How will I know that you’ve received my proposal?

All applicants will receive an email confirmation acknowledging receipt of their proposal immediately after their application is submitted.

Does the program support rental or investment properties for low-to moderate-income people?

No. The project or program must serve owner-occupied low- to moderate-income homebuyers only.

Does the program offer multi-year grants?

No. We do not offer multi-year grants. You must reapply each year.

Are there geographic restrictions for receiving grants?

Housing Foundation grants are limited to the United States. The Housing Foundation accepts proposals from all 50 states.
