David R. Alderson David R. Alderson

Technical & Research Consultant

David advises clients on compliance matters relating to plan documentation, disclosure, corrections, and other issues relating to IRS and DOL regulations and guidance. David oversees the firm’s prototype and volume submitter program, its filing of IRS determination letter requests, and the submission of EPCRS application. He is currently a member of IRS’ Determination Letter Liaison Group, a roundtable consisting of IRS representatives and members from the employee benefits private sector.

Jacob is a consultant in the technical and research department and he has five years of corporate transactional experience. Jacob specializes in regulatory compliance and design consultation for retirement and health and welfare plans.

John Lucas John Lucas, CPA, CPC


John Lucas is a BPS&M Principal as well as the firm’s Director of Technical & Research focusing on client deliverables. John is a “go-to” resource for complicated and arcane compliance matters for our firm and its clients. Typical client projects that John might get involved with include plan design consulting; complex draft document preparation; compliance, corporate governance, and fiduciary review projects; assisting clients with the resolution of ERISA or tax-qualification compliance defects; and consulting related to business acquisitions or divestitures.

Benjamin R. Sears Benjamin R. Sears


Ben has over 30 years of experience in pension and employee benefits. As Director of Research, Ben researches general, technical questions to support firm consultants. He also facilitates dissemination within the firm of employee benefits technical knowledge, and updates on legislative, regulatory, and judicial developments.

Scott joined BPS&M in 2011, after owning and managing a law firm that specialized in federal law. He assists in checking retirement plan documents compliance with regulations and guidelines established by the Internal Revenue Service and the Department of Labor. Scott focuses on document preparation, compliance review, and the review of qualified domestic relations orders.
