Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) is a 20-minute computer-based test that helps doctors and medical professionals evaluate pre- and post-injury neurocognitive functioning, including memory, processing speed, and reaction time. ImPACT compares results of a pre-season baseline test with post-injury test results to assess a player’s level of impairment. Over its 15-year history, ImPACT has become the most widely used and scientifically accepted concussion evaluation system in the United States — in high school, college, and professional sports programs.
Prior to the start of the season, all athletes 10 years old and older enrolled in the Play It Safe Concussion CareSM program participate in ImPACT neurocognitive testing to establish a baseline for comparison purposes should they be concussed during the season.
After an injury
When an athlete appears to have sustained a concussion, he or she is pulled from play and evaluated. As needed, the athlete is sent for clinical assessment and specialty care by a medical professional who is a credentialed ImPACT consultant, trained in the evaluation and management of concussion.
The athlete then undergoes a post-injury ImPACT test and evaluation. The results are compared to the athlete’s pre-season baseline test to help the medical professional determine the scope and magnitude of the concussion, as well as when it is appropriate and safe for the injured athlete to return to play. It may also be helpful to share the information gathered with your family doctor.
The medical professional provides the athlete with an individual follow-up plan that may include rest, gradual reexertion, and reevaluation.
