VITNER: Well, my interest in economics goes way back — all the way to when I was 10 years old, and the issue was that I was on a fixed income.

I got 50 cents a month allowance - and theoretically I could buy five candy bars because they were 10 cents apiece, but the price went up to 15 cents.

And I asked my father, I said, why did the price go up by 5 cents? Can’t the president just order them to lower the prices?

And my father said, you need to read Milton Friedman.

So I went to the library, checked out his book, read Capitalism and Freedom, and pretty much got hooked on economics ever since.
