Starting your own business can be a challenging undertaking. But as Lindsey Haaser can attest, even solo entrepreneurs don’t have to go it alone. The founder and CEO of Advocations — which helps individuals with disabilities find jobs — discusses how outside advice was instrumental in getting her business off the ground. Advocations went on to win the SCORE Award for “Outstanding Job Creator” in 2017.

I think the biggest piece of advice I have for other business owners is that you have two ears and one mouth, and use them proportionately. I decided to reach out to really smart business people, and over time, develop really strong relationships so they could get to know my business a little bit more, because at the end of the day, business is business.

And they were able to help me prioritize things in a new way, understand funding and how to manage my cash flow better, and also just keep me very accountable for the work that I was doing.
