Visa Reason Code 62


Definition:
Counterfeit Transaction. A counterfeit card is used at a merchant location and authorization is obtained without the transmission of the full track data on card's magnetic stripe.

RESULT
For a card present quasi-cash purchase the merchant is required to compare the first 4 digits of the embossed account number with the four digits printed on the card below the number and record those digits on the transaction receipt. To initiate this chargeback the Issuing Bank is required to include in the Chargeback documentation a legible transaction receipt.

You may have a Chargeback representment right. Be sure to review any documentation provided with the Chargeback.

To represent this Chargeback provide a copy of the transaction receipt and the authorization record. State that the 4 printed digits from the front of the credit card were checked and recorded on the receipt, and that the credit card was swiped, electronically authorized and provide the Authorization Code.

According to the information you provided and Visa / MasterCard Chargeback regulations, it does not appear that you can dispute this Chargeback through Wells Fargo.

You may consider contacting the Cardholder directly to discuss potential resolution. If you feel that the Chargeback is in error or you have additional information you wish to discuss, we recommend you contact your Wells Fargo Chargeback representative.

NOTE
If the reason for Chargeback is fraud, consider that direct contact with the Cardholder may not result in resolution. With fraudulent charges, the Cardholder's account was compromised and the Cardholder disputed the charge. If you have reason to believe that the true Cardholder made this purchase and the dispute was an error, then you may consider contacting the Cardholder.

NOTE
A Reason Code 62 counterfeit card transaction is only valid if a transaction involved a card present purchase, in which the card was swiped and authorized, but the terminal failed to transmit the full information on the card's magnetic stripe. Reason code 62 Chargebacks are very unusual. If it appears that the transaction was swiped and authorized through your terminal, we recommend you contact your Chargeback representative to review this item.
