Environmental Grant Program

Throughout our history we have played a role in helping to strengthen communities across the country where we live and work. Today we continue to invest our resources into local communities - with a particular focus on projects that positively impact our environment.
We offer two environmental grant programs - focused on addressing local environmental priorities in our communities and providing support that fosters innovation to help accelerate a "green" economy.
Features of our programs:
  • Build partnerships with local environmental nonprofits who have projects that focus on sustainable agriculture and forestry, water quality, land conservation and support for building healthy urban ecosystems.
  • Seek opportunities to provide resources to universities, colleges, labs, and entrepreneur accelerator programs, all working on commercializing new clean technologies and innovations.
  • We also look for programs that can include opportunities to leverage our vast network of volunteers as well as programs that deliver long-term, measurable results.
Wells Fargo makes contributions to organizations with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, as well as to qualified tribal and governmental agencies, including public school systems.
Please note that Wells Fargo is unable to consider grants for the following:
  • Organizations that are not designated 501(c)(3) by the IRS
  • For-profit entities
  • Political action committees, candidates, and lobbying
  • Labor, religious, fraternal, military, and professional association activities
  • Individuals
  • Travel
  • Sports and athletic groups and activities
  • Endowment campaigns
To learn more about how we are investing our resources in environmental solutions across the country, please see our national and regional environmental grant reports. In 2011, we provided $4.4MM to more than 375 environmental nonprofits across the country. Over time, our environmental giving will continue to grow. Please follow us as we track and report the positive impacts of our programs.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Can my organization apply to both environmental grant programs?
Please submit only one application per organization. Only one grant will be considered per organization per year for our environmental grant programs. So please elect to apply to the program where you feel you have the greatest fit. This applies only to the environmental grant programs and not to other Wells Fargo giving programs. For example, if you apply to another Wells Fargo giving program, you are still eligible to submit a grant to one of the environmental grant programs, however it must be for a different project, and must meet the environmental grant criteria.
How long until I will be notified if my grant has been approved or declined?
For our Environmental Solutions for Communities program, we will notify all grantees of their status/award in the spring of the following year (i.e. applications submitted in September – December 2013 would be notified in spring 2014).

For our Clean Technology and Innovation grant program, we will notify all grantees of their status/award by the end of their application year.
If approved what can I expect in terms of funding for the grant?
For the Environmental Solutions for Communities grant program, detailed funds transfer instructions will be shared with the grant recipient, timing can range from 60-90 days upon announcing the grant award.

For the Clean Technology and Innovation grant program, a check will be sent 45-60 days upon announcing grant award.
What is the deadline for the grant program?
The deadline for the Environmental Solutions for Communities grant program falls in early-mid December of each year, the exact date will be listed on the RFP at the National Fish and Wildlife Webpage.

The Clean Technology and Innovation grant program sends invitation only links to apply for the program throughout the year, all funding will be allocated by the end of October of each year.

**If the deadline date falls on a weekend or holiday, we will extend the deadline to the next business day (i.e. if 8/31 is a Saturday, the program would extend to accept applications through the following Monday)
The links to the grant program take me away from the Wells Fargo site, is this correct?
Yes. The Environmental Solutions for Community Grant Program is funded in collaboration with the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF). You will be directed to the NFWF site to complete the RFP.

The Clean Technology and Innovation Grant Program application will also be directed to a third party site called True Impact.
I missed the deadline for the grant program. How often is the environmental grant program offered to applicants?
The grant programs are offered on a yearly basis though the markets we fund through the Environmental Solutions for Communities Grant program change each year and will be listed on the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) site.
We are located in a state where there is not a Wells Fargo presence. Are we still eligible to apply for the environmental grant?
For the Clean Technology and Innovation Grant Program, we are seeking requests across the entire U.S.. The Environmental Solutions for Communities grant program includes involvement of Wells Fargo volunteers and is better aligned for markets where we have a physical presence. Please check our list of annual markets to see where we are requesting projects each year.
We are an international organization. Is there an opportunity for us to apply for environmental grants?
We are not currently accepting proposals from international organizations, but we hope to include this into our giving strategy in future years, so please check back.
Can you clarify what portion of the request can be indirect costs?
The Clean Technology and Innovation grant program limits indirect costs to no more than 15%.
Can you preview my application before I submit?
Due to the high volume of requests, we are not able to preview applications. If you have specific questions after reading our guidelines, please contact us at
My Organization would like to be considered for a Clean Technology and Innovation Grant, how do I reach a program manager to discuss the opportunity?
This is an invitation only program, if you would like to submit a topic to be considered for funding please send an email to and include a 150 word or less summary of the program/project to be considered.
