We are especially interested in programs that support community economic improvement opportunities for adults and their families, disadvantaged youth, and low-income working adults. Wells Fargo wants to be a catalyst for creating and maintaining strong self-sustaining communities within Alaska, while respecting cultural diversity and recognizing the unique challenges facing our state’s industries.
We are primarily interested in funding the following areas of community economic development:
- Financial skills education for adults and youth
- Job development
- Job placement services
- Transitional housing services and programs
- Business management training
- Revitalization projects for low- and moderate-income areas
- Economic development initiatives benefiting rural Alaska
- Affordable housing rehabilitation and construction projects, including multifamily rental housing and single-family homes
Wells Fargo provides significant financial support to education in Alaska with an emphasis on supporting and preparing our youth for future achievement. In Anchorage, Wells Fargo is focusing on organizations involved in the effort to increase on-time graduation rate to “90% by 2020."
In addition to our significant support of United Way, we consider requests from social and human service organizations for projects with one-time, non-recurring expenses that match our other giving priorities.
Wells Fargo may also provide one-time challenge grants to social service agencies for membership drives intended to increase donor funding. Matching funds will be awarded based on efforts to recruit new members or to increase levels of giving by current members, thereby enhancing the organization’s donor base and, ultimately, its long-term sustainability. Successful proposals will demonstrate how new members will be recruited, how the partnership between Wells Fargo and the organization will be recognized, and how results will be tracked.
Arts and Culture
Wells Fargo also considers requests from organizations that help enhance a community's quality of life through arts, culture or civic projects, and other activities that provide diverse opportunities for a community’s residents.
Wells Fargo makes contributions to organizations with tax-exempt status under Section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Code, as well as to qualified tribal and governmental agencies, including public school systems.
Please note that Wells Fargo is unable to consider grants for the following:
- Multi-year commitments and pledges
- Capital campaigns
- Individuals, including scholarship or fellowship assistance
- Political action committees, candidates, causes, and lobbying
- Labor, religious, or fraternal groups
- Equipment, including computer hardware and software
- Sports or athletic groups and activities
- Hospitals and clinics
- Purchase or maintenance of vehicles
- Film or video projects, including documentaries
- For-profit entities, including start-up small businesses
- Travel, including student trips or tours
- Promotional merchandise
- Beauty pageants
If your organization meets Wells Fargo’s eligibility requirements and fits our giving priorities, we encourage you to proceed with our online application. Minimum grant is typically $2,500, although exceptions may be made in smaller communities. Grant requests will be reviewed with the local Wells Fargo leadership of your community.
We have three major funding cycles and require one consolidated request for a calendar funding year. Deadlines for the funding cycles are February 1, May 1, and August 15, respectively. Off-cycle requests may be held until the next major funding deadline. Applications submitted between August 16 and December 31 will not be accepted. Please submit your request through our online application; paper requests sent via U.S. mail, e-mail, by fax, or through a Wells Fargo team member will not be considered.
The application will require the following information:
- Completed and signed copy of the current IRS Form W-9
- Non-profit designation as a governmental or tribal entity, if applicable
- Specific dollar amount requested
- Agency’s current operating budget
- Most recent audited financial statement
- Project budget
- List of board members
- List of major funding sources
- Evidence that requested funds will serve low- and moderate-income populations, if applicable

1. Do I have to submit all documentation, even if my request is under $1,500?
You must submit a completed and signed copy of the current IRS Form W-9, non-profit designation as a governmental or tribal entity if applicable, a list of board members, and a list of major corporate and foundation contributors and contribution amounts along with your letter of request on agency letterhead.
“Low- and moderate-income” is defined as income less than 80 percent of the area median income for the community served.
Once we have received your complete proposal, the review period is typically 90 to 120 days.
We respectfully request that you wait 90 days after submitting your proposal before calling to check on its status. In most cases, you will have heard from us within that period.
Because of the volume of proposals we receive, it is not always possible to personally visit each organization. When we do make site visits, they are only to organizations that have submitted complete proposals, or to organizations we have previously funded.
Wells Fargo receives far more proposals from worthy organizations than we can support each year. You are welcome to reapply the following year.
A check is normally sent within 30 days after a proposal has been approved.
8. What is your funding cycle?
Grant requests are accepted January 1st through August 15. Only one grant per calendar year per agency will be considered.
